Drywall Repair FAQs
How do you repair drywall?
For most drywall holes, we begin by removing the damaged drywall. We next measure the hole and cut a new piece of drywall to fit, taking care not to damage any existing wiring or pipes in your drywall. Next, we create a backstop to prevent the new drywall patch from falling through. When the backstop is securely in place between two studs, we insert our measured piece of drywall into the hole. The patch is then covered with a joint compound. After the joint compound has cured, we sand the rough edges to smooth them down. The following step is the most difficult and might take a lot of practice: adding a layer of texture to match the surrounding wall texture.
How big of a hole can I spackle up myself?
If the hole is smaller than a dime, it can be fixed with a filler material and repainted.
If I have matching paint, can I just repaint the repaired section?
Walls soak up paint as they age, as well as change color depending on light. While it makes sense to just repair the little section, chances are you’ll need to repaint the entire wall so you don’t see the repaired and repainted sections.
When do you need to replace an entire section of drywall?
There are many reasons to replace the entire drywall board including cracks, larger repair work, or investigating why there is a problem. If you have extensive repair, it’s probably a job for the professionals.
