Drywall Issues at Home: DIY Fixes Vs Professional Drywall Repair
You may find yourself with damages to your drywall after living in your home for an extended period of time. Whether it’s water damage, a crack, or even holes, you might have noticed something and wondered whether or not you can fix it on your own. The good news is that many drywall repairs are relatively easy to do yourself! You simply need the right tools and materials, and hopefully a bit of experience.
As always, there may be times when the damages are above your pay-grade and you would be better off calling in a professional to help you out with the drywall repair. It is important to factor in the amount of work you think needs to be done, the amount of experience you have, and how much time and energy you are willing to spend to ensure the job is done correctly before making a decision.
DIYers
The best practice for a DIYer with drywall issues is to work on small cracks and nail holes. These are two problems that are often relatively easy to fix; they usually appear only in a small area and are not typically a symptom of larger structural or construction-related issues.
You will need drywall compound, drywall tape, and a drywall knife. You can then apply the compound over the damaged areas. It’s best to apply several layers. After applying one layer, let it sit, sand it over to smooth it out, and then repeat the process. You may need to fill in cracks and apply the drywall tape before patching them over, however.
Professional Drywall Repair
If you have a drywall issue and thinking about it gives you a headache, you might as well hire a professional. An example of an issue that may cause you to throw in the towel is a large, creeping crack or bulge in a wall. This could be the result of poor moisture or installation, but it’s definitely best to leave the repair to a professional.
Another thing to consider is the fact that drywall is a respiratory irritant. At this point, we are all used to masks; you should certainly wear one if you plan to do a drywall repair yourself. It is worth noting, however, that professionals will have better equipment to protect themselves and others.
