Cleaning and Maintaining your Painted Walls
Have you ever thought about cleaning and maintaining your painted walls? Unless you are a tradesman like a painter yourself, probably not. Most people probably only clean their walls when they take down all their pictures, posters, and other memorabilia attached to the wall when they move.
And even then, they’re just taking things off the wall, not truly cleaning it. So, how do you do that? How do you go about this revolutionary idea of cleaning and maintaining your painted walls?
Cleaning Principles
Luckily, the practices for cleaning your walls, specifically painted walls, are simpler than you think. Some of them might even blow your mind.
Never use a paper towel, rag, napkin, cloth, or any other paper or fabric product you can think of. Using these kinds of products on your walls will damage them.
Instead, always use a sponge. The best sponge is a heavy-duty, all-purpose polyester sponge. If you’re not that invested, but still interested in cleaning and maintaining your walls, we already know you’re thinking about using a kitchen sponge. Feel free to try it if you really want to, just know that it won’t work as best as a heavy-duty sponge. That’s especially true for stains on the walls that have been sitting for years.
Additionally, only use mild dishwashing soap and water on your sponge. While a heavy-duty sponge works best, there’s not much of a need for a heavy-duty soap to clean your painted walls. Commercial cleaning materials will often break down paint and damage the finish.
If you just painted, allow at least 21 days before washing your newly painted walls. But consider extending it another week, to 28 days, to really be certain your walls are ready for a little spring cleaning.
As far as when to clean your walls, you can wash them twice a year. You can also dust your walls every season, which makes it easy to remember when it’s time to dust them again.
